Scenic Mountain Medical Center Adds High Tech Lithotripsy Service
By: Rudy Haddad, M.D.
Scenic Mountain Medical Center (SMMC) recently upgraded its urological services by acquiring an on-site lithotripter to quickly and safely treat kidney stones. The Medispec E3000 lithotripter will enable Big Spring area residents who suffer from kidney stones to receive virtually immediate treatment for their stones.
The Medicspec E3000 lithotripter was chosen after Dr. Rudy Haddad, board-certified Urologist on the medical staff at SMMC, conducted an extensive review of lithotripters currently on the market. This is the same machine used in some of the top hospitals and stone centers in the world. “The Medispec unit offers Scenic Mountain Medical Center top-of-the-line technology at a very reasonable cost and enables us to offer our patients a better quality of care,” said Dr. Haddad.
Through scientific advancement and redefining technology, the treatment of stone disease has achieved new standards. This equipment allows for excellent stone clearance rates, requires general anesthesia and is an outpatient procedure. It can be performed in fifteen to thirty minutes, requires no incisions, causes only minor discomfort, and allows the patient to return to normal activities quickly.
Dr. Haddad explains “The pain of kidney stones is very significant and relief, through lithotripsy, is almost immediate. This particular lithotripsy unit works by emitting an electrical spark that vaporizes water, transmitting a shock wave. X-ray technology aids in the visualizations of the stone and focuses the shock wave directly onto the calculus (kidney stone). After the procedure is completed the patient stays in the recovery room for thirty to sixty minutes and, when stable, is discharged home. This new equipment has a greater than 90% stone free rate which is, without a doubt, the best in the industry.
Board certified Urologist, Dr. Rudy Haddad has served as a member of the medical staff at Scenic Mountain Medical Center for nearly 30 years. His office is located on the first floor of the Malone & Hogan Clinic. Dr. Haddad and his wife, Maureen, reside and have raised three children in Big Spring and are very active in the community.
