The SMMC Surgery Department offers the convenience of same day outpatient surgery as well as traditional inpatient surgical services all in a comforting and caring atmosphere.
Outpatient Surgery
The Outpatient Day Surgery Center at SMMC is designed to offer our patients a place for both diagnostic testing and surgery in one convenient setting. You’ll benefit from the same qualified medical staff, advanced technology and hospital services – without an overnight stay. With smaller incisions and a shorter recovery time, you get back to doing what you love, and that can make all the difference in the world.
Surgical Services available at SMMC include:
- general surgery
- gynecological surgery
- orthopedics
- pediatric dentistry
- urological services, including Lithotripsy treatment for kidney stones
SMMC recently upgraded it's urological services by acquiring an on-site lithotripter to quickly and safely treat kidney stones. This is the same machine used in some of the top hospitals and stone centers in the world.This equipment allows for excellent stone clearance rates, requires general anesthesia and is an outpatient procedure. It can be performed in fifteen to thirty minutes, requires no incisions, causes only minor discomfort, and allows the patient to return to normal activities quickly. New orthopedic and laparoscopic equipment - an investment of more than $500,000 - provides high-definition video display of joint and bowel areas. This visualization and guidance capability in the operating room means that procedures previously requiring a hospital stay may now be completed more quickly.
General Surgeons Alan Abel, M.D. and Ladd Hoffman, M.D., and now, John Lang, all members of the Medical Staff at SMMC, are a part of the Family Medical Center physician team. The surgical facilities available at SMMC include 3 fully equipped surgical suites.

Board-certified General Surgeon Alan Abel, M.D. attended medical school at the University of Texas and completed his residency at the University of Nevada at Reno in 1985. With more than 20 years surgical experience, Dr. Abel has practiced in Big Spring since 2002. |

Ladd C. Hoffman, M.D.
Board-eligible general Surgeon Ladd Hoffman, M.D. joined the SMMC medical staff in July 2008 after completing his surgical residency at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio. Prior to attending medical school, Dr. Hoffman taught math to high school students in Carthage. |

John Lang, M.D.
Dr. Lang attended medical school at Penn State and, after his general surgery internship and residency in Harrisburg, PA, completed a Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship in Michigan. He has practiced in both PA and TX over the last 6 years and joins Drs. Abel and Hoffman on our FMC Surgical Services team. |
